Recent History of Adoptions in Nepal

The adoption process was completely closed down in early 2007 after allegations of corruption were highly publicized. Approximately 440 families trying to adopt from Nepal got caught up in the closure. Over the next 2 years after much frustration and heartache, most of the families were able to complete their adoptions. Many families who were registered with BalMandir (the state orphanage) prior to the closure, but had not received a referral prior to the closure are still waiting as of June 2009.

May 19, 2008: Nepal publishes the New Terms and Conditions for International Adoption. Establishing a centralized process requiring all adoptions to be processed through the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare.

January 1, 2009: Nepal officially calls for prospective adoptive parents to apply to adopt from Nepal

February 2009: The first dossiers were accepted by the Ministry

April 26, 2009: Three "test" referrals were sent out to 3 lucky families

April 30, 2009: Nepal signs the Hague agreement, but is not expected to ratify it for several years

May 24, 2009: An additional approximately 20 referrals were sent out world wide
